Motorist warned not to drive as hurricane-force winds lash Scotland

  • Winds of up to 100mph are likely to close bridges, blow over and damage property, say police.

  • There will be gusts of 100mph in north-west Scotland and over high ground. Gusts of up to 70mph are expected in northern England and north-west Wales.

  • Hurricane force winds of up to 165mph swept across Scotland today as storms battered Britain and police told people to stay indoors for their own safety.
  • The winds were so strong that a meter tall wind turbine spectacularly caught fire at Ardrossan in North Ayrshire, while pilots landing at Scottish airports had to battle to get their planes down safety in the treacherous conditions.
